Faculty Member, Jazz and Contemporary Music
About
I run the Music Theory and Composition curriculum at the New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music in New York City, and I teach theory, composition, and world music. Most of my research these days is on Cuban rumba, Brazilian popular music, and philosophical reckonings of time, especially as they might pertain to improvised music.
My PhD thesis and a couple of recent conference papers will be available soon on this site, and I have a forthcoming article on time and transformation in Cecil Taylor's early music and review-essays on Gary Peters's "The Philosophy of Improvisation," David Peñalosa's "The Clave Matrix," and Keith Waters's "The Studio Recordings of the Miles Davis Quintet."
I'm also a busy professional performer and composer, and have performed recently with Eddie Palmieri, Jovino Santos Neto, JoJo Kuo, Charlie Hunter, Wayne Horvitz, Tom Varner, Michael Spiro, and many others. My most recent bands include the Caetano Veloso Project and my new (as-yet-unnamed) four-trombone group, and I have new CDs available with the Seattle-based trio Q.E.D. and my quartet Circle By Night, and one forthcoming from my quintet More Zero.
